Allure Best of Beauty 2017: Covergirl

Happy Monday Loves! After seeing the recent release of the 2018 Allure Best of Beauty list, and lists of these products on the Ulta/Sephora websites, I thought I would share some products I had tried from the 2017 list.

Every year, Allure comes out with awards for best foundation, best concealer, best lipstick, etc. Rather than try to purchase every single product, I opted to test products from just one brand. Since Covergirl had the most products on the Best of Beauty 2017 list, I purchased those four products.

Covergirl Vitalist Healthy Elixir Foundation (745- Warm Beige) $11.99

This full-coverage foundation contains SPF 20, and comes in a glass jar with a pump on top. The packaging is very classy, and I always appreciate when foundations have a pump- it makes it so much easier to use, and I feel like I make less of a mess, as well as waste less product. The foundation is definitely full-coverage, and has a pretty natural finish. Unfortunately, the shade selection is pretty slim. I had a hard time selecting a shade that would work for me, and I ended up picking a color that was a little too dark. But with a little concealer and powder, I was able to make the shade work. My biggest complaint about this foundation was the smell! It was almost as if they tried to cover the chemical smell with a sweet perfume, which didn’t work, but they just left it that way. Usually the scent from foundations will dissipate after a few minutes, but this foundation continued to smell for the next hour. At that point, I couldn’t handle it anymore and had to take it off.

 

Covergirl Outlast All-Day Concealer (820- Light) $11.99

I’m gonna be honest y’all… this was BY FAR the worst product of the bunch. I hated the applicator, and really hated the pinky undertones. The concealer didn’t offer much in terms of coverage either. In all honesty, you would be better off just using your full-coverage foundation under the eyes to cover dark circles. I could go on and on about how much this didn’t work for me, but I will spare you the whining, and just suggest an alternative. The Maybelline Fit Me concealer is a much better product if you are in the market for a drugstore concealer.

 

Covergirl Fill, Shape & Define Brow Powder (Soft Brown) $11.99

This product has some potential, but there would definitely be a learning curve required to use it. The applicator is quite strange, and it holds a surprising amount of product. It could be great if you don’t need a lot of precision, and you just want to slap some powder onto your eyebrows. But be warned- since this is a powder product, if you aren’t careful, powder can fall out underneath the eyes. This happened to me while I was using it the first time, and I was forced to re-do my foundation and concealer underneath that eye because there was no way to remove the brow powder without ruining my make-up. I also found this difficult to use on the innermost part of my brows. The powder is so pigmented that the slightest touch from the applicator results in a dramatic deposit of color. This made filling in that portion of my brows pretty difficult. I didn’t hate this product, but I also didn’t love it. I would use it again if I had nothing else, but I definitely won’t be reaching for this over a brow pencil.

 

Covergirl Melting Pout Gel Liquid Lipstick (105) $7.99

This product really just needs to be renamed. It is NOT a liquid lipstick. After applying, it never actually dries down. It stayed sticky and glossy on my lips, and easily transferred onto my food and beverages. The pigmentation and color was great, but its name doesn’t do it justice. If you’re looking for a really pigmented gloss, this might be for you. If you want a long-wearing, transfer-proof liquid lipstick, this is not your product.

To be honest, I’m pretty disappointed in how these so-called “Best of Beauty” products worked out. I know everybody likes different things, but there is absolutely no way the Outlast All-Day Concealer or Melting Pout Gel Liquid Lipstick should have made a best of anything list. There is certainly potential for the Healthy Elixir Foundation and Brow Powder, but they don’t hold a candle to any of my favorite drugstore products.

After this unfortunate experience, I am definitely nervous about testing some of the products on the recently published list. I know everyone’s skin and style is different, so I’m hoping I just happened to pick a few things that just weren’t ideal for me. I’ll be picking up some new goodies off the 2018 list to test out, so if you’ve seen anything you absolutely love, please let me know! Let’s give Allure Best of Beauty 2018 the best chance to redeem itself this time around 😉 After all, I have to confess that I recently subscribed the Allure beauty subscription box. I’ll have to keep y’all posted on the products!
